More Mushrooms

Monday, 17 August 2026

Getting from here to there by driving down Stamets Road in Milford, New Jersey. As with elsewhere around here there are numerous standing dead ash trees. Keep in mind that there has been ample rain of late: 1.67 inches on 7 August (and a whopping 1.32 inches in the evening of 17 August but that's later than when I'm discussing.)

As I'm going down towards Frenchtown Road I notice yellow mushrooms on the side of a dead tree. A softer, paler yellow and more delicate appearance than the bulky chicken of the woods, Laetiporus sulphureus, with which I am familiar.

From several years ago, Laetiporus sulphureus growing on a tree on Creek Road.

No, these are clearly something different. Went where I needed to go but doubled around to pass the trees again, going back.

Fortunately a clear sightline so cars coming and going will easily see me.
Pulled over, parked car, flashers on. Got out camera in hand for a better look.

Yes! Different color, different texture, different form. See the little "stalk"?
Reasonably sure these are golden oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus citrinopileatus.

Interestingly, these are a non-native mushroom. Rumor has it these mushrooms
escaped after a mushroom farm in Iowa had a fire, and are traveling north. Strange.
